Julia’s love letter to the people she’s known online has come at just the perfect time for me, as I’ve used a lot of mental energy recently thinking (fondly!) about the people I know because of the internet and solely on the internet.
I know most of my close friends now because we either met online (Decemberists’ message board, Dumbrella, Tarck, Tumblr!) or met because of friends I had met online. For example: I met Michael, my beau, at a Mountain Goats concert. He was brought by Adam, who he knew from a message board, and I was brought by Jon, who I knew from the Decemberists’ forum. Jon and I were accompanied by people we knew from a third message board. It’s wild.
My entire adult life has been built around the internet and I’m perfectly pleased with that.
