The Olivia Tremor Control - NYC-25

here we go around the world
we spin around on the turnstiles
we create

Tonight, instead of obsessively refreshing the internet to express my outrage over a possibly innocent man being killed by what is supposedly the greatest country in the world, I saw a band I love, The Olivia Tremor Control. It wouldn’t have changed anything if I’d been online instead. Maybe if I’d done something a week ago it would have. Maybe there was nothing anyone could do.

don’t sleep too long
cause everything you need is right here
don’t sleep too long
pleasant dreams but please don’t sleep too long

I haven’t yet emerged from the euphoric afterglow of the concert. It was a really amazing show, filled with hope and human connection and love. I can’t hate humanity while experiences like that exist.

here we are in old New York
ten million eyes stare right through me

This was a sad, awful thing to happen, but I can’t say this one event is more important than the innumerable horrible things that happen and have happened constantly throughout human history. I saw Jeff Mangum perform last week in Boston, and though he may not live up to what people have taken from his work, he too reminded me that life is worthwhile and that  we can transform the worst parts of humanity into something beautiful. We shouldn’t ignore the bad things, and I believe we should try to change them. But I think it’s most important to remember how amazing it is that we’re here at all, and use the little time we have to revel in that strangeness with those around us.

and don’t forget you’re not the only one
(not the only one)
who turned your life all around?

Every time you think, hear, see, listen, or feel, you either reinforce or forge new pathways in your brain, shaping your own reality and that of others. There are things we can’t control, but let’s not underestimate those we can. Listen to this song. Then go to sleep. We’ll start again tomorrow.

Here’s a post I wrote after seeing OTC at le poisson rouge, one of the best shows of my life.
